State and municipal police in Mexicali rescued two people held against their will inside a residence in the Gran Hacienda neighborhood on Sunday afternoon. The operation began after one of the victims, a woman, managed to call emergency services from inside the house where they were being detained.

Emergency Call Triggered Rapid Response

According to reports, the woman placed the call to 911 while still inside the property. Dispatchers relayed the information to both Baja California state police and Mexicali municipal officers, who coordinated a joint response to the location in Gran Hacienda, a residential area in the eastern part of the city.

Officers arrived at the house and confirmed that two people were being held captive. Both victims were freed during the operation. Authorities have not released the names or nationalities of the rescued individuals.

Details on Suspects Remain Limited

As of Sunday evening, officials had not publicly identified any suspects or confirmed whether arrests were made at the scene. The Baja California Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the state attorney general’s office, is expected to take over the investigation into the kidnapping.

Gran Hacienda sits in a developed residential zone of eastern Mexicali, roughly 15 minutes by car from the Calexico East border crossing. The neighborhood is primarily made up of single-family homes in a planned subdivision.

Kidnapping Cases Persist in Baja California

Kidnapping remains a persistent security challenge in Baja California. In late December 2024, state police and military personnel arrested seven individuals in a separate Mexicali kidnapping case and rescued two victims. In that operation, one victim was found in a vehicle trunk and another was discovered tied up inside a home.

The successful rescue on Sunday was largely attributed to the victim’s decision to call 911, which gave law enforcement a precise location and prompted an immediate deployment. Authorities across Baja California have encouraged residents to use the 911 system to report crimes in progress.
