Authorities in Mexicali located nine people who had been reported missing, including two minors ages 13 and 17, according to Baja California’s Specialized Unit for Investigating Forced Disappearances and Disappearances Committed by Private Individuals. All nine were found in good health and returned to their families.

The unit, which operates under the Baja California State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), resolved the cases through a combination of field and office investigations. The nine individuals ranged in age from 13 to 56, each with an active search report on file at the time of their recovery.

No Details on Circumstances

Authorities did not release information about the circumstances of the disappearances or where the individuals were located. The names of those found were also withheld. It remains unclear how long each person had been missing before being located.

The announcement comes as Mexico continues to grapple with a national missing persons crisis. According to a March 2026 report covered by Mexico News Daily, roughly 132,000 people remain officially listed as missing across the country. Of those, investigators have found signs that about 40,000 may still be alive.

Baja California’s Missing Persons Challenge

Baja California is one of Mexico’s most affected states for disappearances, with border cities like Mexicali and Tijuana recording high numbers of cases. The state’s specialized disappearance unit was created to focus exclusively on these investigations, separating them from general law enforcement caseloads.

Mexicali, the capital of Baja California, sits directly across the border from Calexico, California. The city’s population of roughly one million includes a significant cross-border community. Missing persons cases in the region can involve everything from voluntary departures and family disputes to more serious criminal activity.

The successful resolution of nine cases at once is notable for a unit that handles a persistent backlog. Authorities framed the announcement as evidence that the specialized unit is producing results, though they offered no broader statistics on the unit’s overall caseload or closure rate.
