Baja California’s State Investigation Agency (AEI) arrested a man wanted for premeditated homicide in Sonora during a joint operation in Tecate on May 20. The suspect, identified as Jorge Alberto “N,” also known as “El Chore,” had been on the run for more than three years.

Authorities say “El Chore” is accused of killing a person at their home in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora, on April 13, 2022. According to the case file, the suspect confronted the victim at the residence, and a physical struggle broke out. He then opened fire, killing the victim at the scene. He fled the home while continuing to shoot.

Cross-State Coordination Led to Arrest

The arrest came after Sonora’s Attorney General’s Office sent a formal collaboration request to its Baja California counterpart. Sonora’s Criminal Investigation Agency (AMIC) worked with the AEI to locate and detain the suspect in Tecate, a small border city about 50 kilometers east of Tijuana.

Tecate sits along the U.S.-Mexico border, directly south of San Diego County. The city has a population of roughly 110,000 and serves as a crossing point between the two countries. For the suspect, it appears to have served as a hiding place far from the Sonora crime scene, which is located more than 900 kilometers to the southeast.

Extradition Proceedings Underway

Following the capture, Baja California authorities began extradition proceedings to transfer “El Chore” back to Sonora. He will be formally presented before the court in Sonora that issued the arrest warrant. The charge is premeditated homicide with aggravating circumstances.

The case is one example of interstate law enforcement cooperation between Baja California and Sonora, two neighboring states that share a long border. Fugitives from Sonora sometimes cross into Baja California to evade capture, and vice versa, making coordination between the two state-level attorney general offices essential.

The warrant for “El Chore” had been outstanding since the 2022 killing. No details were released about how investigators tracked him to Tecate or how long he had been living there. The original report was published by Jornada BC.
