Mexican military forces and federal prosecutors seized 850 kilograms of methamphetamine, nearly a ton, from a residential property in Tijuana on Sunday, May 31. No arrests were reported in connection with the raid.
The operation was carried out by the FGR’s (Fiscalía General de la República, Mexico’s federal attorney general’s office) Specialized Organized Crime Unit, working alongside troops from the II Military Region and Second Military Zone. Both units are responsible for military operations across Baja California.
What Authorities Found Inside
In addition to the massive meth haul, soldiers and federal agents confiscated a vehicle, eight rounds of ammunition, and electronic devices from the property. Authorities also seized the residence itself, a common step in organized crime investigations when properties are believed to be tied to cartel operations.
All seized materials were transferred to the FGR’s Tijuana field office for further investigation. Officials have not yet identified suspects or disclosed which criminal organization may have been using the house as a stash point.
A Pattern of Major Seizures in Tijuana
The seizure is one of the largest meth busts in Tijuana in recent years, though the border city has seen even bigger hauls. In June 2020, soldiers discovered roughly two tons of methamphetamine, eight tons of marijuana, and 131,500 fentanyl pills at a single Tijuana residence. In March 2023, another Tijuana stash house raid turned up 1.8 million fentanyl pills and 400 kilograms of meth.
Tijuana remains a primary staging ground for drug shipments headed to the United States. Cartels use residential properties across the city to store narcotics before moving them north through ports of entry or tunnels along the border. Just days before the meth seizure, federal authorities on both sides of the border announced the discovery of a cross-border tunnel connecting a Tijuana home to a storefront in Otay Mesa, California, where more than a ton of cocaine was seized.
The FGR has not indicated whether the May 31 raid is connected to any broader investigation or to the nearby tunnel discovery. The case remains under investigation at the federal level.
