A man identified only as Diego and three accomplices shot a 46-year-old man in the left arm during an armed robbery Thursday night in Mexicali’s Pórticos del Valle neighborhood. The attackers stole the victim’s tricycle and other belongings before fleeing the scene.

The victim was transported to Mexicali General Hospital, where he received treatment for the gunshot wound. His condition has not been publicly updated.

Suspect Caught During Separate Kidnapping Call

Municipal police later arrested a suspect while responding to an unrelated kidnapping report in another part of the city. During processing, officers discovered the man had two active arrest warrants: one for armed robbery and one for armed vehicle theft.

Authorities have not confirmed whether the suspect detained is Diego or one of the other three individuals involved in the Thursday night attack. The case has been turned over to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state Attorney General’s office, which will determine the suspect’s role in the shooting and robbery.

Pórticos del Valle: A Residential Area in Southern Mexicali

Pórticos del Valle is a residential subdivision on the southern side of Mexicali, located near the city’s commercial corridors. The neighborhood sits within the broader urban sprawl that has grown rapidly over the past two decades. Street robberies in the area, while not uncommon, rarely involve firearms being discharged at victims.

The use of a tricycle, a common mode of transport and mobile vending in Mexicali, as the robbery target points to the opportunistic nature of the crime. Tricycles are frequently used by street vendors and residents for short-distance hauling throughout the city.

Three additional suspects remain at large. Police have not released descriptions or further identifying details about the other individuals involved in the attack.
