A Mexicali municipal police officer named Cristobal Campos was shot six times as he arrived at his home in the División del Norte neighborhood on the morning of Thursday, March 26. At least one bullet struck his leg. Campos drove himself to the Anáhuac station of the Municipal Public Security directorate, where he received first aid before being transported to a hospital.
Officer Drove to Anáhuac Station After Attack
State prosecutor María Elena Andrade confirmed the details of the shooting. She said the gunfire appeared to come from a vehicle, though authorities have not released information about the number of attackers or a possible motive.
Mexicali’s Municipal Police director and Luis Felipe Chan both visited the hospital to verify Campos’s condition. They confirmed the officer was out of danger and in stable condition. No further details about his treatment or expected recovery timeline have been made public.
División del Norte Shooting Under Investigation
División del Norte sits in the eastern section of Mexicali, a border city of roughly one million people directly across from Calexico, California. The neighborhood is a residential area where many municipal workers and their families live. The Anáhuac station, where Campos sought help, serves as one of the city’s main police substations.
Attacks on law enforcement officers in Mexicali have occurred repeatedly in recent years. Baja California’s FGE (state attorney general’s office) has investigated multiple shootings targeting on-duty and off-duty police across the state. Just weeks after this incident, in April 2025, a Tijuana police officer was killed during a shootout with a U.S. fugitive in a separate case that drew national attention.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified suspects in the Campos shooting. The FGE is leading the investigation, according to La Voz de la Frontera.
