Mexicali Man Sought for Alleged Abuse of 4-Year-Old Niece

Authorities in Mexicali are searching for a man identified as Humberto “N” after he allegedly sexually abused his 4-year-old niece on March 20 in the city’s Colonia Hidalgo neighborhood. The suspect, who was entrusted with caring for the child, fled before prosecutors could secure an arrest warrant in the Mexicali child abuse case.

Mother Says Prosecutors Were Slow to Act

The girl’s mother, Cinthya Calderón, went public with the case after she encountered delays in the investigation. According to her account, no arrest warrant was issued in the days following the reported assault. Psychological evaluations for the child were scheduled months into the future.

Calderón said she had left her daughter in the care of her brother out of economic necessity. She described the anguish of trusting a family member who then allegedly harmed her child.

Only after media coverage of the case did state prosecutors from FGE (Baja California’s state attorney general’s office) intervene to accelerate the process. The shift came quickly once reporters began asking questions about the stalled investigation.

Pattern of Delayed Response in Baja California

The case follows a pattern in Baja California where child abuse allegations face slow institutional responses. In September 2024, FGE opened an investigation into alleged sexual abuse of a 3-year-old girl at the “Graciano Viniegra” kindergarten in Mexicali’s Colonia 27 de Septiembre only after the child’s mother posted about the assault on social media. State Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez confirmed at the time that agents began their probe after seeing the social media posts.

Colonia Hidalgo, where the March 20 incident allegedly occurred, sits in central Mexicali, a sprawling border city of roughly 1.1 million residents directly south of Calexico, California. The neighborhood is a densely populated residential area east of the city’s commercial core.

Humberto “N” remains at large. Under Mexican privacy law, the suspect’s full surname is withheld from public reports until formal charges are filed. Calderón has called on authorities to locate and arrest him before he can leave the state or cross the border.

FGE has not publicly commented on the status of the arrest warrant or whether it has been issued. The next steps in the case depend on prosecutors completing the child’s forensic evaluation and formalizing charges, as reported by The Baja Post.
