A Mexicali judge formally bound Jesús Aarón “N” over for trial on charges of attempted feminicide, aggravated unlawful deprivation of liberty, vehicle theft, and robbery following a 12-hour hearing that concluded in the early hours of Sunday, May 24. The ruling came after the Baja California FGE (Fiscalía General del Estado, the state attorney general’s office) presented evidence of a brutal attack against Grecia Aguirre, his ex-partner.

The judge rejected the defense’s attempt to reclassify the charges as simple domestic violence. In making the decision, the court cited the severity of Grecia’s injuries, her prolonged deprivation of medical care, and a prior 2016 complaint she had filed against Aarón for rape and domestic violence. He will remain in pretrial detention, with four months granted for supplementary investigation.

How Grecia Escaped

The case gained widespread public attention after Grecia posted a video on May 19 showing her badly beaten face. She described how her ex-partner broke into her home in western Mexicali around 5:00 a.m. on May 17, choked her, and beat her until she lost consciousness. Each time she came to, she said, the attack continued. He repeatedly told her he was going to kill her and that it would be the last time she would see her children and family.

When Grecia regained consciousness again, she found herself inside her own vehicle on the Mexicali-San Felipe highway. She managed to escape when Aarón stopped at a gas station to refuel. Grecia was taken to Hospital General de Mexicali, where doctors documented skull fractures, broken ribs, a fractured hand, bruising across her neck, face, and body, and 11 stitches in her head. Medical experts determined her injuries were life-threatening.

Defense Argument Rejected by Court

During the hearing, the defense made a striking argument: that Aarón had shown restraint by not killing Grecia at a nearby canal. Prosecutors flatly rejected the claim, arguing the only reason the attack stopped was his need to refuel the vehicle. The judge sided with prosecutors on every charge.

Grecia has publicly stated she fears for her life, the lives of her children, and the safety of her sisters. The case has renewed public debate about domestic violence enforcement in Baja California, where attempted feminicide charges remain difficult to prosecute. Aarón had turned himself in to authorities and was initially charged on May 20 before the formal binding-over hearing this weekend.
