A Mexicali judge has formally charged a suspect known as “El Monkey” in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old man who was killed while trying to sell his car through social media on May 17.
The victim, Juan David Ballesteros Méndez, had listed a 2015 white BMW for sale online and was showing the vehicle to a potential buyer when he was shot and killed. The defendant, identified only as Paul “N” under Mexican privacy laws, allegedly boarded the BMW with Ballesteros Méndez before the shooting took place.
Witnesses Placed Suspect Inside the Vehicle
Prosecutors built their case in part on witness testimony. People at the scene told investigators they saw El Monkey get into the car with the victim shortly before the fatal shots were fired. The specific location of the shooting within Mexicali was not disclosed in the court filing.
The judge determined there was sufficient evidence to formally charge Paul “N” and ordered him held in pretrial detention. He will remain in custody while prosecutors conduct a four-month complementary investigation into the killing.
Next Hearing Set for November
The next court hearing in the case is scheduled for November 5. During the investigation period, prosecutors will gather additional evidence, interview more witnesses, and prepare for a possible trial.
The case is a stark reminder of the dangers of arranging private vehicle sales through social media platforms, a practice common on both sides of the border. In Mexicali, classified listings for used cars circulate widely on Facebook Marketplace and local buy-and-sell groups, where sellers typically meet buyers in person to show vehicles.
Ballesteros Méndez was just 21 years old at the time of his death. No motive has been publicly announced by prosecutors, and it remains unclear whether the suspect intended to rob the victim or targeted him for other reasons.
The case was first reported by La Jornada BC.
