Motorists discovered a man’s body with multiple gunshot wounds on the shoulder of the Tijuana-Ensenada scenic toll highway Saturday morning near kilometer 32, at the Kontiki Bridge overpass.

The body was found on the Ensenada-to-Tijuana side of the road. Passing drivers spotted the victim and called 911 to report the discovery.

Guardia Nacional Responds to the Scene

Officers from the Guardia Nacional (National Guard) arrived first and confirmed the man had been shot multiple times. The victim was wearing jeans and a gray jacket. His identity has not been released.

Authorities cordoned off the area and secured the scene while awaiting the arrival of state prosecutors from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s attorney general’s office. Investigators will handle the forensic examination and formal identification of the victim.

A Familiar Stretch of Road

The kilometer 32 marker on the scenic toll road places the discovery roughly between the Rosarito and La Misión areas, a stretch of coastline well known to weekend travelers and commuters heading between Tijuana and Ensenada. The toll highway, formally known as the Autopista Escénica Tijuana-Ensenada, runs along dramatic Pacific Ocean cliffs and is one of Baja California’s most heavily traveled corridors.

The Kontiki Bridge overpass sits in a relatively isolated section between populated areas, making it a location where criminal activity can occur with fewer witnesses.

Baja California has experienced persistent homicide rates in recent years, with Tijuana consistently ranking among Mexico’s most violent cities. While the scenic highway corridor is generally considered safe for daytime travel, incidents of violence along its shoulders and access roads are not unprecedented. Last year, three foreign surfers were murdered near the Ensenada coast, drawing international attention to security conditions in the region.

No suspects have been identified in Saturday’s killing. State prosecutors had not released further details as of Saturday afternoon.
