Armed attackers shot and killed a 41-year-old man Wednesday afternoon in Tijuana’s Colonia Oaxaca neighborhood. The victim was identified as Juan Ignacio Navarrete Hernández, originally from Michoacán and known by the alias “Camarón.”

The shooting took place on the afternoon of May 6. Multiple armed individuals opened fire on Navarrete Hernández, then fled the scene in a pickup truck. Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified suspects in the case.

Tijuana’s Homicide Count Continues to Climb

The killing adds to a grim toll in Tijuana, which has recorded 318 homicides so far in 2026, according to Zeta Tijuana. The city, located just south of the San Diego border crossing, has struggled with persistent gun violence tied to organized crime and territorial disputes for years.

Colonia Oaxaca is a residential neighborhood in Tijuana’s urban core, located away from the main tourist corridor along Avenida Revolución and the Zona Río commercial district. The area is not typically frequented by visitors or foreign residents.

No Arrests Reported

Investigators from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, responded to the scene. No motive has been publicly disclosed. The use of a pickup truck as a getaway vehicle and the involvement of multiple armed attackers are consistent with patterns seen in other targeted killings across the city this year.

Tijuana’s homicide rate has remained among the highest in Mexico for several consecutive years. The city recorded more than 1,500 homicides in some recent years, though authorities have at times reported modest declines. The 318 homicides through early May 2026 put the city roughly on pace with prior years.
