A Baja California Sur court sentenced a man to 22 years and six months in prison for the aggravated sexual assault of a minor in Ciudad Constitución. The verdict against Efraín N. was handed down on June 12, 2026.
The attack took place on the afternoon of February 1, 2025, at a residence in the Los Pinos neighborhood of Ciudad Constitución, a small agricultural city located about 130 miles north of La Paz along the Transpeninsular Highway (Highway 1). In addition to the prison sentence, the court imposed a fine equivalent to 300 days of wages.
Prosecution Built Full Evidentiary Case
The conviction was secured by the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office (PGJE, Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado) through its Specialized Unit for Crimes Against Sexual Liberty and the Family. The court admitted all evidence presented by prosecutors, according to a public statement from the PGJE.
Under Mexican law, sexual assault against a minor is classified as an aggravated offense, which carries significantly heavier penalties than the same crime committed against an adult. The 22-year, six-month sentence is among the longer terms issued for this type of crime in the state.
Ciudad Constitución: Hub of the Magdalena Plain
Ciudad Constitución serves as the municipal seat of Comondú, one of the five municipalities in Baja California Sur. The city of roughly 40,000 residents sits in the Magdalena Plain, an important agricultural region. While it sees far fewer foreign visitors than Los Cabos or La Paz, the area is known to travelers who pass through on Highway 1 or visit nearby Bahía Magdalena for whale watching.
The PGJE’s public announcement of the sentence stated the office maintains a zero-tolerance policy toward impunity in crimes against minors. The case moved from arrest to sentencing in approximately 16 months, a relatively swift timeline for the state’s criminal courts.
