The FGE has not disclosed the circumstances surrounding his disappearance or whether foul play is suspected. No details about his occupation or reason for being on the island have been made public.

A Remote Island With Limited Access

Isla de Cedros sits roughly 400 kilometers south of the city of Ensenada, off the central Pacific coast of the Baja California peninsula. The island is home to approximately 1,233 residents, most of whom depend on fishing and a salt mining operation. Transportation to and from the island is limited to small aircraft and boats, and communication infrastructure is minimal.

The island’s isolation makes search coordination difficult. Reaching Isla de Cedros from Ensenada typically requires a flight to the island’s small airstrip or a lengthy boat crossing from the fishing village of Punta Eugenia on the mainland. These logistical barriers make public tips from anyone who has recently traveled to or from the island especially valuable to investigators.

How to Report Information

Anyone with information about Abel Alcántar Gómez’s whereabouts can contact the FGE at (646) 152-25-00, extensions 2559 or 2560. Tips can also be reported by calling emergency services at 911 or by submitting an anonymous tip through the confidential line at 089.
