Ensenada police and state investigators arrested a man accused of beating his ex-partner and stealing her car, a burgundy Toyota Corolla with foreign plates, on April 17.

The suspect, identified as Efraín “N” under Mexican privacy law, allegedly attacked the woman on April 14. She called 911 to report the assault. Three days later, officers from the Ensenada municipal police and agents from the Baja California Attorney General’s Office (Fiscalía General del Estado, or FGE) tracked him down and made the arrest.

Judge Orders Pretrial Detention

A judge reviewed the case and ordered Efraín into preventive custody (prisión preventiva) while the criminal proceedings move forward. Under Mexico’s justice system, preventive detention is imposed when a judge determines there is a flight risk or a danger to the victim.

The case involves charges related to both domestic violence and vehicle theft. The FGE is handling the prosecution.

Foreign-Plated Vehicle Recovered

One detail stands out for the foreign resident community in Ensenada: the stolen Toyota Corolla carried foreign plates. Many expats and cross-border commuters in Baja California drive vehicles registered in the United States or Canada. These cars can be targets for theft because their registration status sometimes complicates recovery efforts across jurisdictions.

In this case, the vehicle was identified and linked to the suspect during the investigation. Residents who drive foreign-plated vehicles in Baja California should keep copies of their registration, title, and temporary import permits (if applicable) in a separate location from the car itself. This can speed up the recovery process if a vehicle is stolen.

How to Report Crimes in Ensenada

Victims of domestic violence or vehicle theft in Baja California can call 911 for immediate emergencies. To file a formal complaint (denuncia), residents can visit the nearest FGE office. In Ensenada, the FGE office handles intake for criminal cases and can assist Spanish and English speakers. The victim in this case used the 911 system to report the attack, and the arrest followed within 72 hours.
