An unidentified man was found dead Wednesday afternoon on the Mexicali to San Felipe highway near Ejido Michoacán de Ocampo in the Valle de Mexicali. The body showed visible neck injuries, and authorities have opened a homicide investigation.
The discovery came at approximately 4:12 p.m. after an emergency caller reported a person lying on the roadway near the Canal Grande and the municipal dump. Municipal police arrived and confirmed the man was dead. Paramedics and agents from the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), the state investigation agency, were called to the scene.
Victim Remains Unidentified
The victim was wearing jeans and a blue shirt. No identification was recovered, and the man has not been publicly identified. The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, cordoned off the area and opened a formal investigation.
El Imparcial, a Mexicali daily, confirmed the same details in its own report Thursday morning, describing the body as showing “apparent marks of violence.” The location near the Canal Grande places the scene roughly 30 kilometers southeast of central Mexicali, in a rural stretch of the valley dominated by agricultural land and irrigation canals.
A Key Route for San Felipe Travelers
The Mexicali to San Felipe highway (Baja California Highway 5) is the primary road linking Mexicali to the Gulf of California beach town of San Felipe, about 190 kilometers to the south. Thousands of U.S. and Canadian visitors drive the corridor each year to reach San Felipe’s fishing and camping spots.
The stretch near Ejido Michoacán de Ocampo runs through open desert and farmland, with limited services and sparse population. Roadside body discoveries in rural areas of the Valle de Mexicali have occurred periodically over the past several years, often tied to organized crime activity in the region.
Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances of the man’s death or any suspects. The FGE has not indicated whether the case is connected to any broader criminal investigation.
