Emergency crews recovered a man’s body from the Canal Pacífico in the Mexicali Valley on Wednesday morning after receiving a report of a person in the water.
Municipal Police officers and firefighters responded to the scene in the agricultural area south of the city of Mexicali. Upon arrival, first responders confirmed the man showed no signs of life.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. Officials have not released the victim’s identity or provided details on a possible cause of death.
The Canal Pacífico is one of several major irrigation channels that crisscross the Mexicali Valley, a flat agricultural region stretching south and east of the state capital. The canal system, part of Mexico’s Irrigation District 014, supports cotton, wheat, and vegetable farming across thousands of hectares in the valley.
Mexicali’s Recent Security Picture
The discovery comes during a period of elevated security concerns in Mexicali. As of late June, Mexicali police recorded at least 10 violent homicides in the municipality, according to local law enforcement figures. It remains unclear whether this latest death will be classified as a homicide, an accident, or another cause pending the investigation’s results.
Canal drownings, both accidental and criminal, occur periodically in the Mexicali Valley. The open irrigation channels run through remote stretches of farmland with limited fencing or lighting, making them a recurring hazard.
The Mexicali Valley sits just south of the U.S. border crossing at Calexico, California. Residents of the Imperial Valley and travelers crossing into Mexico regularly pass through the area on Highway 5 heading toward San Felipe or other Baja California destinations.
Authorities have not announced any arrests or identified persons of interest. The investigation is being handled by the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office. This story was first reported by Zeta Tijuana.
