Tijuana municipal police arrested a 53-year-old man from Jalisco on Sunday night after he fatally beat another driver following a traffic collision in the El Monte neighborhood, one of the latest road rage killings in Baja California’s largest city.
The incident occurred on March 22 near Camino al Rancho in El Monte, a residential area in eastern Tijuana. Witnesses told police that Edgar Anaya, 45, was driving a Toyota Camry when a Mercedes Benz struck his vehicle. After the collision, the Mercedes driver attacked Anaya, beating him until he lost consciousness.
Paramedics Found Anaya Without Vital Signs
Emergency medical crews responded to the scene but found Anaya unresponsive and without vital signs. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspect did not flee and remained near the vehicles until Tijuana municipal police arrived and placed him in custody.
State prosecutors from the FGE (Baja California’s state attorney general’s office) processed the scene and collected evidence. The suspect faces homicide charges. His name has not been publicly released, but authorities confirmed he is originally from Jalisco, a state in western Mexico roughly 1,200 miles southeast of Tijuana.
Deadly Road Rage in a City With Heavy Traffic
Tijuana, home to roughly 2 million residents and tens of thousands of daily cross-border commuters, has seen repeated cases of minor traffic incidents turning violent. The city’s congested roads, particularly around the international border crossings and the Vía Rápida corridor, create high-stress driving conditions. El Monte sits east of Tijuana’s city center, away from the main tourist zones but along routes used by commuters heading toward Tecate.
Mexican law requires drivers involved in collisions to remain at the scene, contact police, and wait for an insurance adjuster. Leaving the scene of an accident can result in criminal charges, but so can confrontation. In this case, what began as a routine fender-bender escalated to a killing in minutes.
The suspect is expected to appear before a judge in the coming days to face formal homicide charges, according to Punto Norte.
