A man identified as Carlos N. has been formally bound over for trial in La Paz on charges of aggravated rape and aggravated sexual abuse of a minor. A control judge ordered preventive detention for the accused and gave prosecutors three months to complete their investigation.

The Baja California Sur state attorney general’s office (PGJE) presented the case before a control judge, who determined there was sufficient evidence to proceed. The alleged offenses took place at a residence in the Pedregal del Cortez neighborhood, a residential area on the southern edge of La Paz.

Charges Span Multiple Dates in 2025

According to the PGJE, the abuse is alleged to have occurred between March 9 and March 30, 2025, and again on July 30, 2025. Prosecutors did not release the age of the victim, citing protections for minors under Mexican law.

The judge granted the prosecution a complementary investigation period of three months. During this window, investigators will gather additional evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare the case for oral trial. Carlos N. will remain in preventive detention throughout.

What Preventive Detention Means in This Case

Under Mexico’s criminal justice system, preventive detention (prisión preventiva) is mandatory for certain serious offenses, including sexual crimes against minors. The accused cannot post bail while the investigation continues. If convicted, he could face decades in prison under Baja California Sur’s penal code.

Pedregal del Cortez sits in the southern portion of La Paz, near the road that connects the city to the Balandra and Pichilingue beach areas. The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a mix of single-family homes and small apartment buildings.

The case is one of several recent sexual abuse prosecutions brought by the PGJE in Baja California Sur. State authorities have faced pressure in recent years to improve response times and conviction rates in crimes against minors.
