Authorities in La Paz arrested a 39-year-old man on Wednesday morning after finding approximately 18 grams of methamphetamine on his person in Colonia 3 de Mayo, a residential neighborhood on the city’s west side.

The suspect, identified as Ángel Francisco, was detained on Calle Misioneros Combonianos after investigators from the Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office (FGE) acted on anonymous tips about drug activity in the area. Officers on patrol observed the man behaving evasively as he walked near their vehicle, prompting them to approach and conduct a search.

Six Packets of Meth Seized

The search turned up one bag and five individually wrapped packets containing crystal methamphetamine. Authorities estimated the total weight at roughly 18 grams, enough for approximately 360 individual doses. Ángel Francisco was immediately placed under arrest and transferred to the FGE’s specialized narcotics prosecution unit in La Paz for processing.

Colonia 3 de Mayo sits southwest of La Paz’s downtown core, inland from the malecón area frequented by visitors. The neighborhood is primarily residential, home to working-class families. Calle Misioneros Combonianos runs through the colonia’s interior blocks.

BCS Attorney General Targets Drug Activity in Residential Areas

The FGE said the arrest was part of an ongoing effort to follow up on citizen complaints about drug dealing in residential colonias across the La Paz municipality. Anonymous tip lines have been generating leads that result in active enforcement operations in neighborhoods previously flagged for narcotics activity.

Methamphetamine remains the most commonly seized drug in Baja California Sur. Street-level arrests like this one, while small in scale compared to cartel-level trafficking busts, target the retail distribution that directly affects neighborhood safety. Possession of 18 grams in Mexico can carry federal trafficking charges, as the amount far exceeds the threshold for personal use under Mexican health law.

Ángel Francisco faces prosecution under federal narcotics statutes. No further details about his background or prior criminal record were released. The arrest was first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
