Four gunmen opened fire on federal agents conducting an operation in Tijuana’s Pedregal de Santa Julia neighborhood on Wednesday, June 18, around 12:30 p.m. The agents, from Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office (FGR), were not injured in the attack. No arrests were made.
The shooting occurred in the San Antonio de los Buenos district, a hilly area in Tijuana’s southern zone roughly 15 miles south of the San Ysidro border crossing. The four suspects fled on foot into the surrounding canyons after firing on the federal team.
Multi-Agency Search Comes Up Empty
The attack triggered a large security response. Tijuana Municipal Police, the State Security Force (FESC), the State Investigation Agency (AEI), the Mexican Army (Sedena), and the National Guard all deployed to the area. Authorities used drones and foot patrols to sweep through Cañón El Gallo and Cañón de las Carretas, two steep ravines adjacent to the neighborhood. The search failed to locate the gunmen.
Pedregal de Santa Julia sits in rugged canyon terrain that has long posed challenges for law enforcement. The deep ravines and informal hillside development offer natural cover and escape routes. The neighborhood is known as a high-crime area where organized crime groups have maintained a persistent presence.
Federal Operations Under Pressure in Southern Tijuana
The willingness of armed individuals to fire directly on FGR agents in broad daylight points to the ongoing territorial pressures in Tijuana’s southern colonias. These hillside neighborhoods, far from the tourist zones and commercial corridors near the border, have seen repeated confrontations between security forces and criminal groups in recent years.
The FGR operates independently from state and municipal law enforcement and handles federal crimes including drug trafficking and organized crime cases. The nature of the operation that drew agents to Pedregal de Santa Julia on Wednesday has not been disclosed.
Tijuana has remained one of Mexico’s most contested cities for criminal organizations. The incident comes as federal, state, and military forces continue joint operations across the Baja California border region. For context, recent weeks have also seen federal charges filed in connection with a cross-border tunnel running from Tijuana into Otay Mesa in San Diego County.
