Armed gunmen opened fire on a Baja California State Security Force (FESC) patrol vehicle on the Ensenada-Mexicali highway, striking the unit multiple times. The armored vehicle absorbed bullet impacts to its engine block and rear door, but all officers inside escaped without injuries. State Security Secretary Laureano Carrillo Rodríguez confirmed no casualties resulted from the attack.

Aerial and Ground Search Launched

Authorities activated an emergency response protocol involving both ground operations and aerial support. The Mexican Navy (SEMAR) deployed a helicopter to patrol critical corridors along the route, including the areas near Tecate, El Hongo, and La Rumorosa. These mountain communities sit along the steep, winding stretch of Highway 3 that connects the coast at Ensenada to the Mexicali valley.

After 48 hours of search operations across the region, no suspects have been arrested. Investigators have not publicly identified a motive or named any group responsible for the ambush.

A Key Route Through the Mountains

The Ensenada-Mexicali highway is one of Baja California’s primary inland corridors. It climbs from sea level near the wine country of the Valle de Guadalupe through the Sierra de Juárez, passing through the small town of El Hongo before descending the dramatic La Rumorosa grade into the desert floor east of Tecate. Many residents, commercial truckers, and travelers use the route daily to move between the Pacific coast and the state capital.

The ambush follows a pattern of attacks on law enforcement in Baja California. In February 2024, gunmen killed one municipal police officer and wounded another in a separate attack near Ensenada, firing roughly 100 rounds at officers at a gas station on the Tecate-Ensenada road. In August 2022, cartel-linked violence swept across multiple Baja California cities, with armed groups burning at least 19 vehicles in Tecate, Tijuana, Playas de Rosarito, Mexicali, and Ensenada.

No Arrests After 48 Hours

The fact that the patrol vehicle’s armor held during the attack likely prevented officer fatalities. Carrillo Rodríguez confirmed that security forces remain deployed across the mountain corridor but offered no timeline for potential arrests. State prosecutors have not issued a public statement on the investigation.
