A fire tore through an informal settlement along Vía Rápida Alamar near Cañón del Padre in Tijuana on Friday afternoon, damaging at least 30 homes. Multiple Tijuana Fire Department units responded in a coordinated effort to control and extinguish the blaze.
No deaths had been reported as crews worked to contain the fire. The cause of the blaze was not immediately known.
Hillside Settlements Face Recurring Fire Risk
Informal hillside settlements in Tijuana are especially prone to fast-moving fires. Homes in these communities are built close together, often using wood, cardboard, tarps, and other materials that ignite quickly. Narrow, unpaved roads limit access for fire trucks and other emergency vehicles.
Vía Rápida Alamar is a major east-west corridor in Tijuana that connects several residential neighborhoods to the city center. The area near Cañón del Padre sits on steep terrain east of the Alamar River channel, where irregular settlements have expanded for decades as migrants and lower-income residents built homes on unoccupied hillsides.
A Pattern of Devastating Fires
Tijuana has a history of destructive fires in informal settlements. In July 2025, two simultaneous fires in the El Niño and Terrazas del Valle neighborhoods destroyed 29 homes combined. In March 2026, five homes burned in the Leandro Valle neighborhood. A particularly devastating episode in December 2020 saw more than 60 homes destroyed across multiple fires during a Santa Ana wind event, with one person killed.
In that 2020 disaster, then-Mayor Arturo González acknowledged that many fire hydrants lacked water, leaving crews unable to fight the flames effectively. Water access and hydrant maintenance remain persistent concerns in Tijuana’s outlying neighborhoods.
Traffic and Emergency Response
Drivers using Vía Rápida Alamar should expect possible lane closures and delays while firefighting operations continue. Residents displaced by the fire will likely need emergency shelter and supplies. Municipal authorities had not yet announced the opening of temporary shelters at the time of this report.
