A two-month-old girl died from asphyxiation Sunday morning in La Paz, and the baby’s 24-year-old father is in custody as the primary suspect.
The incident occurred in the La Pasión neighborhood of the Baja California Sur state capital. Authorities responded to the scene on Sunday, March 29, after receiving a report about the infant’s death. The Baja California Sur Attorney General’s Office (Procuraduría General de Justicia del Estado) opened a formal investigation.
Suspect Fled Before Police Detained Him
According to authorities, the father, a 24-year-old man originally from the state of Oaxaca, learned that police were on their way to the scene. He fled the La Pasión neighborhood on foot, heading toward unpopulated areas and the La Paz to Cabo San Lucas highway.
Officers located and detained the suspect near a gas facility along his escape route. His full name has not been publicly released by authorities at this stage of the investigation.
Authorities Questioning the Mother
Investigators are also questioning the baby’s mother to clarify the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. The state Attorney General’s Office said it has opened the case under standard protocols and is applying a gender perspective lens to the investigation, a framework required under Mexican law for crimes involving potential gender-based violence.
The La Pasión neighborhood sits in the southern section of La Paz, the capital city of Baja California Sur. The area is a residential zone located several kilometers from the city’s tourist waterfront along the Malecón.
La Paz, home to roughly 300,000 residents, typically records far fewer violent crimes than other Mexican cities of comparable size. Crimes against children remain rare in the state capital, making Sunday’s case particularly shocking for the local community.
The investigation remains active, and prosecutors have not yet announced formal charges. The case was first reported by Colectivo Pericú, a Baja California Sur news outlet.
