A judge in Ensenada sentenced a man identified as Edgar “N” to one year and two months in prison for domestic violence against his mother. The case stems from a March 5, 2025, incident in the Los Encinos subdivision, where the man physically and psychologically abused the victim before locking her in a bathroom overnight.
According to investigators, the mother was unable to free herself until the following day. She then made her way to a local police station to report the abuse. By the time she reached authorities, her health had noticeably deteriorated.
Prosecutors Coordinated Across Two Units
The Fiscalía Regional de Ensenada (Ensenada Regional Prosecutor’s Office) led the case in coordination with the Unidad de Tramitación Masiva de Causa, a unit that handles high-volume case processing in Baja California’s court system. The coordination between the two offices allowed the case to move forward to sentencing.
Under Mexican law, the defendant’s last name is withheld and replaced with “N” to protect the identity of the accused before a final, non-appealable verdict. Edgar “N” was convicted and sentenced to the 14-month prison term.
Short Sentence Draws Attention
The sentence of one year and two months is notable given the severity of the alleged conduct. In Baja California, domestic violence penalties can vary widely depending on the specific charges, the classification of injuries, and whether the case is resolved through an abbreviated proceeding or a full trial. Abbreviated proceedings, where the defendant accepts responsibility, often result in reduced sentences.
Domestic violence remains a persistent problem across Baja California. The state’s Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE) has in recent years expanded specialized units to handle family violence cases, particularly those involving elder abuse and violence against women. Ensenada, a port city of roughly 520,000 people located about 80 miles south of the U.S. border at Tijuana, processes hundreds of domestic violence complaints each year.
The victim’s age and current condition were not disclosed in the original report. It is also unclear whether a protective order was issued as part of the sentencing.
