Eight men were killed across the municipality of Tecate between Friday night and Sunday in a series of executions linked to an ongoing territorial war between rival drug cartels. The killings, which took place between May 29 and May 31, left pink piglets and narco-messages at the crime scenes, according to Zeta Tijuana.

The pink piglets and written messages are a known form of cartel intimidation, used to send signals to rival organizations and local populations. Their presence at multiple scenes points to a coordinated campaign rather than isolated incidents.

Sinaloa Cartel and CJNG Fight for Tecate

Authorities have linked the violence to fighting between the Sinaloa Cartel and the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) for control of Tecate. The small border city, designated a Pueblo Mágico by the Mexican government, sits on a strategic corridor between Tijuana and Mexicali. That position makes it a transit point for drug trafficking routes heading north into the United States.

All eight victims were men. Details about their identities or the specific locations of each killing within the municipality were not immediately released. The eight deaths in a 48-hour window represent a sharp escalation for a city that typically sees far less violence than neighboring Tijuana.

A City Already on Edge

Tecate has been caught up in broader cartel conflicts in recent months. In February, the city was among four Baja California municipalities hit by retaliatory violence after Mexican authorities killed CJNG leader Nemesio Rubén Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho.” During that wave of unrest, vehicles and businesses were set on fire across Tijuana, Mexicali, Tecate, and San Quintín. The U.S. Consulate issued shelter-in-place orders for its staff and advised American citizens in the region to stay home.

Local officials in Tecate told residents not to leave their homes during the February crisis. The U.S. Embassy extended warnings to citizens in nine Mexican states, including Baja California.

What This Means for the Border Region

Tecate’s port of entry, which connects to the small community of Tecate, California, operates regular hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Travelers crossing at Tecate or driving the Tecate-Ensenada highway should verify road conditions before departing. The city is about 35 miles east of Tijuana and roughly 65 miles west of Mexicali.

Security experts have noted that the removal of high-value cartel leaders often triggers prolonged power struggles. The death of El Mencho in February created a vacuum within CJNG that the Sinaloa Cartel has sought to exploit across Baja California. Tecate, with its smaller police force and geographic position along trafficking routes, remains particularly vulnerable to this kind of territorial contest.
