A woman was killed instantly on the evening of April 14 when an intoxicated driver ran a stop sign and slammed into her car on Bulevar Venustiano Carranza in Mexicali. The collision occurred at approximately 8 p.m. at the intersection with Avenida Río Verde.

The driver of a 2014 white Kia Forte blew through the stop sign and struck a 2005 blue Honda Civic. The force of the impact pushed the Honda nearly 15 meters (about 49 feet) from the point of collision. The woman behind the wheel of the Honda died at the scene.

Driver Detained, Victim Not Yet Identified

Authorities had not identified the victim as of the initial report. The intoxicated driver was detained at the scene and will be referred to the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state Attorney General’s office, for prosecution.

The fatal crash is the latest in a string of deadly traffic incidents in Mexicali. Just two weeks later, on April 28, a separate stop sign violation at the intersection of Laguna Xochimilco Avenue and Calzada de los Monarcas Avenue in the Paseo de las Flores neighborhood killed two women and injured three others, including a two-year-old child. In that case, police identified the at-fault driver as Gabriel Alberto, 30, who was behind the wheel of a white 2013 Honda Accord.

A Persistent Problem on Mexicali Streets

Bulevar Venustiano Carranza is one of Mexicali’s major east-west corridors, running through commercial and residential zones on the city’s west side. The boulevard sees heavy traffic throughout the day and into the evening hours. Avenida Río Verde intersects it in an area where stop sign compliance has long been inconsistent.

Traffic fatalities involving impaired drivers remain a recurring problem in Mexicali. The city’s grid of wide boulevards and smaller cross streets creates frequent conflict points at intersections, particularly after dark when visibility drops and enforcement thins out. Drivers crossing Mexicali should treat every intersection with caution, even when they have the right of way.
