A 41-year-old woman driving a BMW at over 100 km/h (62 mph) while intoxicated crashed into a parked vehicle and sparked a car fire on Boulevard Agua Caliente in Tijuana early Friday morning, July 10.
The crash occurred shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the Aviación neighborhood, near the intersection with Calle Pablo Sidar. The driver lost control, veered out of her lane, and slammed into a parked red Ford Expedition. The impact pushed the Expedition onto the sidewalk, leaving it a total loss.
BMW Catches Fire After Traveling 50 Meters
After striking the parked truck, the BMW continued roughly 50 meters before coming to a stop and catching fire. The driver managed to escape the vehicle before flames fully engulfed it. Tijuana firefighters responded to extinguish the blaze, which reduced the late-model BMW to a total loss as well.
Responding officers detected a strong odor of alcohol on the driver. She was transported to municipal medical services for evaluation. No other injuries were reported, as the Ford Expedition was unoccupied at the time of the collision.
A Familiar Corridor for Expats and Visitors
Boulevard Agua Caliente is one of Tijuana’s primary commercial arteries, running through the city’s hotel and business district. The crash site sits near the Grand Hotel Tijuana and the Caliente racetrack area, a stretch well known to cross-border commuters and visitors. The boulevard also passes landmarks including Landmark Square and the Agua Caliente casino complex.
The incident temporarily closed lanes while emergency crews worked the scene. A separate source, Tijuana en Línea, identified the crash location as Boulevard Salinas in the same Aviación neighborhood and confirmed the driver’s age at 41 years old. The outlet also reported that firefighters deployed hose lines at the intersection to contain the fire.
Pattern of Dangerous Incidents on the Boulevard
The early-morning crash adds to a pattern of serious traffic incidents along this corridor. In March 2025, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run on Boulevard Agua Caliente near Landmark Square, also in the Aviación neighborhood. The boulevard’s wide lanes and high speeds make it particularly hazardous during overnight hours when impaired driving is most common.
Tijuana authorities have faced growing pressure to enforce nighttime traffic regulations on major boulevards. Whether the driver will face criminal drunk driving charges or only administrative penalties was not immediately confirmed.
