A judge has formally bound over a man for trial after he allegedly caused a drunk driving crash on June 6 in the commercial zone of Ejido Nuevo Mexicali, a rural community located south of Ensenada along the Transpeninsular Highway.
The San Quintín Regional Prosecutor’s Office secured the judicial order against Luis Fernando “N” on charges of negligent property damage and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol. Under Mexican legal privacy conventions, the suspect’s full surname is withheld during proceedings.
Bystanders Detained the Driver at the Scene
The crash occurred in the commercial area of the ejido and involved injuries, according to the prosecutor’s account. Witnesses at the scene stepped in to detain Luis Fernando before authorities arrived. A C5 emergency monitoring center alert about the collision dispatched security forces to the location.
C5 is Baja California’s centralized surveillance and emergency coordination system, which monitors cameras and 911 calls across the state. The system relayed the crash report to local police, who responded and took custody of the suspect.
Charges and Legal Process
Prosecutors presented enough evidence for a judge to formally open a criminal case. Luis Fernando now faces two charges: negligent property damage and driving under the influence. Both are prosecuted under Baja California’s state penal code.
Ejido Nuevo Mexicali sits along the highway corridor between Ensenada and San Quintín, an area frequented by tourists and expats heading to wineries, beaches, and fishing spots along the Pacific coast. The commercial zone serves as a supply stop for travelers and local agricultural workers.
Drunk driving remains a persistent safety concern throughout Baja California. State authorities have increased sobriety checkpoints in recent years, particularly on weekends and holidays along major highways.
The case will now proceed through the state court system in the San Quintín judicial district. No information was released about the extent of injuries sustained in the crash or the condition of any victims.
