State prosecutors in Baja California Sur discovered a decomposed male body in a clandestine burial site near Ejido 1 in Comondú municipality on Saturday, March 28. The Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the state attorney general’s office, located the grave along the road between Ciudad Constitución and Ejido 1 after receiving an anonymous tip.

The discovery came during ongoing investigations into missing persons cases in the region. Forensic specialists processed the scene following established protocol. Representatives from citizen search collectives were present during the exhumation.

Identification Pending as Forensic Work Continues

Authorities have not yet identified the remains. The advanced state of decomposition will require genetic and specialized forensic testing, according to the FGE. No further details about the victim or a possible cause of death have been released.

Comondú, a sprawling municipality in central Baja California Sur, has become an increasingly common location for clandestine graves. Ciudad Constitución, the municipality’s largest town, sits about 200 kilometers northwest of La Paz along the Transpeninsular Highway. The area between the city and surrounding ejidos consists of flat agricultural land and desert scrub, terrain that has drawn grim attention from search groups in recent years.

Comondú Part of a Wider Pattern Across BCS

This latest discovery adds to a disturbing tally across the state. As of mid-2025, at least 23 sets of human remains had been recovered from clandestine graves in Comondú municipality alone. La Paz led the count with 74, followed by Los Cabos with 41 and Mulegé with three. Loreto remained the only municipality with no recorded discoveries.

Just weeks before this find, in early March 2026, an anonymous tip led authorities and the citizen search group Búsqueda x La Paz to five clandestine graves containing six sets of human remains in a separate Comondú location near the La Paz to San Juan de la Costa highway. That discovery, reported on March 12, involved a site hidden in scrubland along isolated dirt roads.

Search Collectives Play Growing Role

Citizen search collectives have become essential partners in locating hidden graves throughout Baja California Sur. Groups like Búsqueda x La Paz, composed largely of families of the missing, have learned to identify disturbed soil and other signs of burial in remote desert areas. Their presence at the March 28 site is consistent with a growing pattern of collaboration between volunteer searchers and state prosecutors.

The FGE has not announced any arrests in connection with the latest discovery. Anyone with information about missing persons in the Comondú area is encouraged to contact the state prosecutor’s office.
