Municipal police in Cabo San Lucas have launched a heightened security operation for the 2026 World Cup weekend, deploying aerial drones over downtown and coordinating patrols with the Mexican Navy. The operation peaks Sunday, July 5, when Mexico faces England at 5:00 p.m.
The joint effort involves the Los Cabos Director of Public Security, Preventive Police, and Municipal Transit. Officials described the effort as an “Air Surveillance Operation” designed to monitor high-traffic areas throughout central Cabo San Lucas and prevent crowd-related incidents.
Nearly 200 Officers on the Streets
The security buildup follows a successful deployment during Mexico’s earlier World Cup matches. According to the Los Cabos City Council, authorities sent nearly 200 security personnel to cover celebrations after a previous match. That operation included drone surveillance from above and breathalyzer checkpoints around the perimeter of the tourist zone.
Los Cabos Public Security Director Larumbe Pineda said the city plans to repeat that approach for every major match. “We will be reinforcing security whenever there are certain events, not only during the national team’s games, but especially now with the World Cup,” Larumbe Pineda said. “We will always have operations in place to provide security and protection to the people who live in Los Cabos.”
One Arrest, Peaceful Celebrations So Far
During the current operation, police made one arrest for alleged vandalism on private property. The earlier match celebrations saw hundreds of fans take to the streets of Cabo San Lucas, with car caravans also forming in neighboring San José del Cabo. That round of festivities ended without a single significant incident, according to city officials.
A municipal police spokesperson said the drone program is central to the strategy. “The incorporation of aerial technology allows us to optimize surveillance efforts, prevent criminal activity, and provide a more efficient response to protect the peace and safety of Cabo families,” the spokesperson said.
What to Expect Sunday Evening
Residents and visitors in the marina and centro areas of Cabo San Lucas should expect a visible police presence through Sunday evening. Strategic checkpoints and increased foot patrols will be concentrated in downtown and tourist zones. Those planning to watch the Mexico vs. England match at public venues or bars should carry identification and be prepared for security checks.
The 5:00 p.m. kickoff on Sunday is expected to draw large crowds to outdoor viewing areas and restaurants across Los Cabos, as originally reported by the Gringo Gazette.
