The body of a burned infant discovered on June 3 inside a suitcase along a rural road south of Tecate remains unidentified, Baja California State Attorney General María Elena Andrade Ramírez confirmed Tuesday. Investigators have no leads on the child’s identity despite weeks of canvassing the surrounding area.
Strangulation Before Burning
The child’s body was found in the Nueva Hindú neighborhood, located along the highway connecting Tecate to Ensenada. Initial forensic findings determined the infant died by strangulation before being burned and placed inside the suitcase on the rural road.
The Baja California Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), the state attorney general’s office, assigned 10 pairs of agents to conduct door-to-door interviews in communities surrounding the discovery site. Those interviews have so far produced no information about the child’s identity or the circumstances of the death.
Investigation Expands Beyond Tecate
Andrade Ramírez said the investigation has expanded to other municipalities in Baja California, a sign that authorities believe the child may not be from the immediate Tecate area. The Tecate to Ensenada corridor runs through sparsely populated terrain with scattered rural communities, making witness identification difficult.
Tecate, a border city of roughly 110,000 residents about 35 miles east of Tijuana, sits along the U.S. border with the California community of Tecate on the American side. The Nueva Hindú neighborhood lies on the southern outskirts of the city, near where the highway begins its descent toward Ensenada through hilly, semi-arid landscape.
Authorities Seek Public Help
The case has drawn widespread attention across Baja California for its severity. State prosecutors are asking anyone with information to contact the FGE. Residents along the Tecate to Ensenada highway who may have noticed unusual activity around June 3 are particularly urged to come forward.
No suspects have been named or detained. The investigation remains open, and authorities have not released further details about the child’s approximate age or other identifying characteristics beyond describing the victim as an infant.
