Authorities in Mexicali discovered the body of an unidentified man on Thursday morning in the Sol del Amanecer neighborhood on the city’s west side. The victim was found bound at the hands and feet, wrapped, and showing visible signs of violence.
A 911 call came in at 10:13 a.m. reporting the body at the intersection of Avenida de la Burocracia and Avenida Belgrado. The location sits near a Guardia Nacional (National Guard) barracks in the neighborhood. Municipal Police and investigators from the Fiscalía General del Estado (FGE), Baja California’s state attorney general’s office, responded to secure the scene and open a homicide investigation.
Victim Remains Unidentified
The man’s identity has not been released. Authorities have not disclosed details about the victim’s age or possible motive for the killing. The body was found wrapped and bound, a method associated with organized crime activity in the region.
The killing is being counted as the second homicide in Mexicali this month. The city recorded seven homicides in May, according to local media tallies.
Mexicali’s Ongoing Security Concerns
Sol del Amanecer is a residential neighborhood in western Mexicali, roughly three miles south of the Calexico border crossing. The area is not typically a focal point for violent crime, though Mexicali has faced persistent security challenges in recent years.
In January 2026, a severed head and a threatening banner signed by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) were left outside a police substation in the nearby Villas del Sol neighborhood. Earlier this year, search teams discovered a tenth mass grave in the Mexicali Valley, bringing the body count from clandestine burial sites in the area to at least 20.
The FGE has not released further details about the Sol del Amanecer case. No arrests have been announced.
