Baja California Sur state police arrested eight people and seized narcotics, stolen vehicles, and illegally installed surveillance cameras during coordinated operations across all five municipalities on April 20.

The largest haul came from Los Cabos, where four people were detained in the neighborhoods of El Zacatal, Vista Hermosa Plus, and Santa Rosa. Officers recovered 154 packets containing substances that appeared to be crystal methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. In Cabo San Lucas, police also recovered four vehicles reported stolen from foreign registries.

La Paz Arrests and Fugitive Captured

In La Paz, two people were arrested in possession of crystal meth and marijuana. Officers also dismantled an unauthorized surveillance camera as part of the ongoing BOM (Bases de Operaciones Mixtas) operation, which targets cartel-installed monitoring equipment in residential and public areas.

At the secondary inspection checkpoint at Puerto Pichilingue, the ferry port serving routes between La Paz and mainland Mexico, police apprehended a 51-year-old man wanted on homicide charges by authorities in the state of Jalisco. The checkpoint, located along the road leading to the Baja Ferries terminal, screens travelers arriving from and departing to Mazatlán and Topolobampo.

Illegal Cameras Removed in Mulegé and Loreto

Operations in Mulegé and Loreto produced additional arrests and the removal of more illegally placed surveillance cameras. The cameras are a recurring concern across BCS. Criminal organizations install them to monitor police movements and track rival groups, often placing them on utility poles or rooftops in colonias with active drug distribution.

The statewide sweep comes during a period of heightened security activity in Baja California Sur. In late April 2025, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico issued an alert citing an “emerging security situation” in the state. By May 2025, the BCS state government coordinated with federal authorities to deploy over 300 additional security personnel across La Paz, Los Cabos, Comondú, Loreto, and Mulegé.

The recovery of four foreign-registered stolen vehicles in Cabo San Lucas is relevant for anyone who drives a U.S. or Canadian-plated car in the Los Cabos area. Vehicle theft targeting foreign plates remains a persistent issue in tourist corridors throughout Baja California Sur.
