Baja California Sur recorded 1,446 domestic violence investigations between January and May 2026, according to the state’s latest common crime incidence report. That figure averages out to 289 new cases per month, with reports climbing steadily through the period and peaking at 337 in May.
The May total marked the highest single month for domestic violence complaints so far this year. An additional 401 complaints for failure to meet family support obligations were filed during the same five-month window.
Year-Over-Year Numbers Climbing
The 2026 pace represents a notable increase over the previous year. During the same January-to-May stretch in 2025, the state logged 1,329 domestic violence cases. That means 2026 is running 117 cases ahead, roughly a 9% increase.
The trend aligns with broader statewide data. A report from the Secretariado Ejecutivo del Sistema Nacional de Seguridad Pública (SESNSP), Mexico’s national public safety statistics agency, placed Baja California Sur fourth in the country for domestic violence in early 2026. The state registered a rate of 55.11 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the first bimester of the year.
BCS Among National Leaders in Gender Violence
Domestic violence is not the only category where BCS ranks high nationally. According to the SESNSP data published by El Sudcaliforniano in April, the state also ranked eighth in the country for rape cases, with 3.58 per 100,000 inhabitants, nearly double the national average. Complaints of intentional injuries, sexual abuse, and harassment all increased compared to the same period in 2025.
Three feminicides were recorded in BCS in the first months of 2026, already half the total reported in all of 2025. State authorities have said they are reviewing hotspots through a program called Mesa Violeta, which tracks areas with the highest concentration of gender violence reports.
Domestic Violence Remains Top Reported Crime
Domestic violence consistently ranks as one of the most frequently reported common crimes across the Baja California peninsula. For comparison, the city of Tijuana alone in neighboring Baja California reported more than 4,000 domestic violence cases through October 2024, and the full state of Baja California had 12,601 active investigations during that period.
