An armed man fired multiple shots in Tijuana’s Zona Norte district on Wednesday afternoon before fleeing police and crashing into a vehicle carrying an elderly couple near Calle Segunda.
The suspect was driving a Chevrolet when he opened fire in the area, prompting a police response. He fled from officers but lost control of his vehicle and collided with a Buick occupied by the elderly couple. After the crash, the man abandoned the Chevrolet and ran from the scene on foot.
Elderly Couple Hospitalized After Crash
Firefighters and Red Cross paramedics responded to the collision site near Calle Segunda, one of central Tijuana’s main east-west corridors. They transported the injured couple to a local hospital for treatment. The severity of their injuries has not been officially confirmed.
A large police deployment followed the shooting and chase. Officers fanned out across the surrounding blocks in search of the suspect. Unofficial reports indicate one person was detained in connection with the incident, though authorities had not released a formal statement confirming an arrest at the time of the original report.
Zona Norte Location Raises Safety Concerns
The shooting took place in Zona Norte, the district immediately south of the San Ysidro border crossing. The neighborhood is well known to cross-border visitors as a nightlife and commercial corridor. Calle Segunda, where the crash occurred, runs parallel to the more heavily trafficked Avenida Revolución just a few blocks to the south.
Wednesday’s incident adds to a series of public safety events in central Tijuana in recent months. In April, a separate high-profile manhunt unfolded in the city after an escaped U.S. murder convict allegedly killed a Tijuana police commander during an attempted arrest, leading to a massive law enforcement operation across multiple neighborhoods.
Police activity in the Zona Norte area may have continued into Wednesday evening as officers secured the scene and gathered evidence. Visitors crossing from San Diego should be aware that increased police presence near Calle Segunda could cause temporary traffic disruptions.
