An ammonia leak at a commercial building on Avenida Espinoza in Ensenada’s Colonia Obrera neighborhood forced a large emergency response Thursday afternoon. Twenty firefighters, along with municipal police, rushed to the site after the chemical began escaping from faulty valves inside the business.
Officers immediately closed surrounding streets to keep pedestrians and drivers away from the area. The city’s Urban Rescue division entered the building wearing specialized protective equipment to locate and contain the source of the leak.
One Person Treated for Ammonia Inhalation
One person near the site inhaled ammonia fumes and was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel. Responders reported the individual was out of danger after receiving care.
Ammonia is a colorless gas with a sharp, pungent odor. Even brief exposure can irritate the eyes, nose, throat, and lungs. At higher concentrations, it can cause serious respiratory damage. The chemical is commonly used in refrigeration systems and industrial cleaning at commercial facilities throughout Baja California.
Quick Response Limited Wider Exposure
The rapid street closures and hazmat protocol helped prevent broader exposure to residents in the surrounding blocks. Colonia Obrera sits just south of Ensenada’s downtown core, a mixed residential and commercial area familiar to many who pass through the city’s central corridors.
Ensenada’s fire department has handled similar chemical incidents in recent years as the city’s industrial and commercial footprint has grown. Ammonia leaks from aging valve systems and poorly maintained refrigeration lines remain a recurring risk at cold storage and food processing operations along the coast.
By Thursday evening, the situation appeared fully contained, and streets near Avenida Espinoza had reopened to normal traffic. Authorities did not release the name of the affected business or indicate whether it would face any penalties for the faulty equipment.
