A 22 year old man was shot and killed Wednesday afternoon in the Las Fuentes neighborhood of Tijuana, with two suspects still at large. Police identified the victim as Melvin Noé Rodríguez Acosta, who was found on Fuentes de Tijuana street with at least four gunshot wounds.
Police Responded Around 4 p.m. on Fuentes de Tijuana Street
Officers from the Tijuana municipal police arrived at the scene around 4 p.m. Wednesday. Paramedics confirmed Rodríguez Acosta was already dead when they reached him. The victim’s body was found on the street in the Fraccionamiento Las Fuentes subdivision, a residential area in Tijuana’s eastern sprawl.
Investigators said two suspects, a man and a woman, fled the scene before police arrived. Authorities have not released descriptions of the pair or identified a possible motive. The FGE (Baja California’s state attorney general’s office) is expected to lead the homicide investigation.
Las Fuentes Sits in Tijuana’s Eastern Residential Zone
Las Fuentes is a working class housing development east of central Tijuana, well removed from the tourist corridor along Avenida Revolución and the San Ysidro border crossing. The neighborhood sits among a dense cluster of similar subdivisions that grew rapidly during Tijuana’s housing boom in the early 2000s. It is not an area where foreign visitors typically spend time.
Tijuana recorded 1,375 homicides in 2024, making it one of Mexico’s deadliest cities. So far in 2025, the city has continued to see frequent targeted killings in residential colonias, many linked to organized crime turf disputes. The February 2025 cartel violence that saw vehicles torched across the city drew international attention, but most of Tijuana’s daily homicides receive little coverage outside the local press.
Wednesday’s shooting adds to a persistent pattern of daytime violence in Tijuana’s eastern and southern neighborhoods. Authorities have not said whether the killing appears connected to organized crime or was a personal dispute.
