Twenty-one passengers were injured Wednesday when a public transit bus rear-ended a tanker truck on Boulevard 2000 in Tijuana, near the turnoff to the Santa María subdivision. The crash involved unit #543 of the Azul y Blanco bus line, one of the city’s main public transit operators.
The bus was traveling toward Playas de Rosarito when it struck the rear of the tanker. Passengers on board described the collision as significant. Emergency services responded to the scene, though authorities have not yet released details on the severity of the injuries.
Key Route Between Tijuana and Rosarito
Boulevard 2000 is a major arterial road connecting eastern Tijuana to Playas de Rosarito. Thousands of commuters, including residents of housing developments like Santa María, Puerta Plata, and El Florido, use the boulevard daily. The road also carries freight traffic heading south along the coast.
The stretch near Santa María sits roughly midway between the Tijuana urban core and Rosarito’s northern edge. A Reddit post with dashcam footage of the scene described the collision as a fatal accident at Boulevard 2000 near Puerta Plata, though the original source from Zeta Tijuana did not report any deaths.
Azul y Blanco Line and Road Safety Concerns
Azul y Blanco operates a fleet of large public buses across Tijuana’s busiest corridors. The line is a familiar sight on routes linking residential zones to the city center and the border. Bus safety has been a recurring concern in Baja California, where aging fleets, heavy traffic, and limited transit infrastructure contribute to accidents.
Boulevard 2000 has seen several serious collisions in recent years. The road carries a mix of passenger buses, cargo trucks, and private vehicles, often at high speeds. Sections of the boulevard lack dividers or protected transit lanes.
Authorities have not announced whether the bus driver faces any charges or whether the tanker was stopped or in motion at the time of impact. Cleanup and investigation are expected to cause traffic delays along the boulevard.
Drivers and bus passengers traveling between Tijuana and Rosarito should expect possible lane closures in both directions near Santa María. The incident was first reported by Zeta Tijuana.
