Security forces in Baja California arrested 12 people within 48 hours of two targeted killings of state police officers in the Mexicali Valley, authorities announced on June 30. Five of those detained are believed to have direct ties to organized crime leaders responsible for the attacks.

The operation involved dozens of police elements from the Secretariat of Citizen Security of Baja California (SSCBC) and investigators from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE), backed by the Mexican Army. During the sweep, authorities seized stolen vehicles, a motorcycle, and two firearms.

Two Officers Killed in Separate Attacks

The crackdown followed the murders of two members of the FESC (Fuerza Estatal de Seguridad en Circunstancias Especiales), Baja California’s special circumstances security force. Rubén López, a 27-year-old state police officer, was shot dead alongside his 26-year-old wife, Anayeli Anaya, outside their home in Mexicali on Friday, June 27. Anaya was shielding the couple’s three-year-old son when she was killed. The boy survived.

The following day, 32-year-old state police officer Manuel Enrique Guerrero Sánchez was gunned down at a taquería in Mexicali. A woman was also wounded in that attack and was reported in serious condition.

Authorities Link Killings to Cartel Retaliation

At a press conference on Sunday, Baja California Security Minister Laureano Carrillo and State Attorney General María Elena Andrade said the attacks may be linked to recent security operations in the Mexicali Valley. During those earlier operations, an alleged member of the Los Rusos criminal group was killed in a confrontation with state police. Los Rusos is a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel that operates in the agricultural communities east of Mexicali, near the U.S. border with Calexico and El Centro.

The Mexicali Valley, a sprawling area of farmland and small towns southeast of the city center, has seen periodic cartel violence in recent years. The region sits along key smuggling corridors into California’s Imperial Valley.

Security Forces Remain Deployed

Authorities said they expect the large-scale military and police presence to continue in the area until all suspects connected to the officers’ deaths are apprehended. Both the SSCBC and FGE are operating at full capacity on the investigation.

The case is one of the most serious attacks on Baja California law enforcement in recent memory, and it comes during a period of heightened cartel competition along the state’s border region. This story was first reported by The Baja Post.
