The Zonkeys de Tijuana have launched open tryouts for boys born in 2012 and 2013 as the professional basketball club builds its roster for the Minicopa México 2027 national youth tournament. The announcement, made on June 9, invites young players to compete for a spot on the team that will represent Tijuana at one of Mexico’s top developmental basketball events.

Tryouts will take place at Arena Zonkeys, the club’s 3,000-seat home court in Tijuana. Players in the boys’ division born in 2012 or 2013 are eligible. Interested families can register through the club’s official link or by contacting Club Deportivo Zonkeys on social media. The club is also fielding questions by phone at (664) 108-3527.

Trip to Spain on the Line for Champions

The stakes for the Minicopa México 2027 are significant. The winning team earns a fully paid trip to Spain to compete against youth squads in the Minicopa Endesa, one of international basketball’s most prestigious youth events. Tijuana Zonkeys won the Minicopa México title in 2025, sending that year’s squad to Spain. The same prize structure applied in 2024 and 2026.

The Minicopa Endesa is organized alongside Spain’s Copa del Rey professional basketball tournament. It features top youth academies from Spanish clubs alongside international guest teams, giving young players exposure to elite competition abroad.

Who Are the Zonkeys?

The Zonkeys de Tijuana are a professional basketball franchise founded in 2010. They compete in CIBACOPA (Circuito de Baloncesto de la Costa del Pacífico), a Pacific Coast league that is one of Mexico’s top regional basketball circuits. The team has won three CIBACOPA championships: in 2014, 2015, and 2018. Rafael Carrillo Barrón serves as club president.

The club’s youth development program feeds directly into its Minicopa efforts. For kids aged 12 to 13 in the Tijuana area, the tryouts offer a path into organized, competitive basketball with a professional organization behind it.

No specific tryout dates have been publicly confirmed beyond the open registration period. Families should monitor the Club Deportivo Zonkeys social media accounts for scheduling updates.
