The Autonomous University of Baja California Sur (UABCS) has published a free field guide documenting 115 bird species found on its La Paz campus. The guide, released as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations, is available for free download through the Lab. Aves UABCS Facebook page.
The project was coordinated by the university’s Laboratorio de Aves (Bird Laboratory). Authors include Víctor Ayala Pérez, Roberto Carmona, Nallely Arce, Georgina Brabata Domínguez, and Gabriela Cruz Piñón.
Four Habitats on One Campus
The guide covers four distinct habitat types found within the university grounds: xerophytic scrubland, agricultural fields, ornamental vegetation, and urbanized zones. Each habitat supports different species, and the guide organizes its entries accordingly.
The UABCS campus sits on the southern outskirts of La Paz, along Carretera al Sur at kilometer 5.5. The surrounding desert landscape blends with irrigated green spaces and built areas on campus, creating a patchwork of micro-habitats that attracts a wide range of species. The university was founded in 1976 and has grown into the state’s main public university.
A Resource for Birders in La Paz
The Baja California peninsula is a well-known birding destination, with endemic and migratory species drawing observers year-round. La Paz sits at a crossroads between the Sea of Cortez coast and the Cape Region’s drier interior, making it a productive area for bird observation.
Having 115 documented species within a single university campus shows the density of birdlife in the La Paz area. The guide gives birders a tool specific to one accessible, walkable location rather than covering a broad region.
