Tropical Storm Douglas formed Wednesday in the Pacific Ocean after Tropical Depression Four-E gained strength, but the system poses no threat to Baja California Sur or any part of Mexico’s coastline.
At 3:00 p.m. local time on July 1, the storm’s center was located about 1,960 kilometers (1,220 miles) west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, according to Mexico’s National Meteorological Service (SMN). The U.S. National Hurricane Center confirmed the storm’s formation the same day.
Storm Details and Forecast Track
Douglas was packing maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h (40 mph) with gusts up to 85 km/h (53 mph). The system was moving northward at 11 km/h (7 mph) over open water, well away from any populated areas.
Forecasters expect Douglas to remain at tropical storm strength through July 2 before gradually weakening. The storm is projected to become a tropical depression and then a post-tropical remnant as it continues over the open Pacific.
No rainfall warnings, coastal watch zones, or special advisories have been issued for Baja California Sur. Authorities have not activated any emergency protocols related to the storm.
What Residents and Visitors Should Know
With nearly 1,220 miles of open ocean separating Douglas from the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, the storm is not expected to produce any direct effects on the region. Conditions in Los Cabos, La Paz, and other coastal communities should remain unaffected.
The SMN will continue monitoring the system and will issue updated reports as the storm progresses. For anyone tracking Pacific hurricane season, Douglas is the fourth named tropical system of the 2026 Eastern Pacific season.
Pacific hurricane season runs from May 15 through November 30. Baja California Sur is particularly exposed to tropical systems between August and October, when warmer ocean temperatures bring storms closer to the peninsula. Last year’s season saw several close calls for the Los Cabos corridor.
