Several major streets in Tijuana’s Zona Río will close to traffic Sunday morning, June 7, for the second annual “Corre Sin Tabaco” 5K race. The closures take effect from 6:30 to 9 a.m., and drivers crossing the commercial district should plan alternate routes.

The race is organized by IMSAMA (Instituto Municipal de Salud Mental y Adicciones), Tijuana’s municipal mental health and addiction institute. It starts at 7 a.m. at the CREA Sports Complex.

Which Streets Are Closed

The affected roads include Boulevard Padre Kino, Paseo de los Héroes, Vía Lenta Oriente, Vía de la Juventud Oriente, and Calle Rubén Romero between Paseo del Centenario and the Pueblo Amigo Hotel. These are among the most heavily traveled roads in Zona Río, home to restaurants, shopping centers, and the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT).

The city government is asking drivers to use alternate routes. Recommended detours include Boulevard Sánchez Taboada, Boulevard Cuauhtémoc, Boulevard Agua Caliente, Boulevard General Manuel Márquez de León, and Boulevard Insurgentes. Fast lanes (vías rápidas) in the area will also remain open.

Race Details and Registration

Last year’s inaugural edition of the race took place at Parque Morelos, based on video documentation from the 2025 event. This year’s course has moved to Zona Río, starting and finishing at the CREA Sports Complex.

Runners who have not yet registered can sign up at an on-site module at the CREA complex before the 7 a.m. start. The event promotes physical activity and tobacco-free lifestyles as part of IMSAMA’s public health outreach.

All closures are temporary. The city expects roads to reopen by 9 a.m., giving Sunday brunch crowds and border-crossing commuters a clear path through the district by mid-morning.
