Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz formally reopened the renovated swimming pool at the Unidad Deportiva Tijuana on Wednesday, restoring a public aquatic facility that had been closed for more than two years due to deteriorating conditions.
The city invested 1.5 million pesos (roughly $75,000 USD) in the rehabilitation of the pool. The facility had fallen into disrepair and was shut down at least as far back as early 2024, leaving residents without access to one of the city’s few municipal swimming options.
A Key Public Facility Back in Service
The Unidad Deportiva Tijuana is one of the city’s main public sports complexes. Located on Prolongación Paseo de los Héroes in the Alfonso Coronel del Rosal neighborhood, the complex is managed by the Instituto Municipal del Deporte (IMDET), Tijuana’s municipal sports institute. The facility operates daily from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Beyond the pool, the complex offers fields and courts for multiple sports. The swimming pool, however, had been a persistent sore point for residents who rely on city-run recreation options. Public pools are scarce in Tijuana, and private gym memberships with pool access can run several hundred pesos per month, putting them out of reach for many families.
Reopening Comes Ahead of Summer Heat
The timing of the reopening is notable. Tijuana’s warmest months run from July through September, when daytime temperatures regularly exceed 80°F. Demand for public pools spikes during this period, particularly among families with children on summer break.
The Burgueño administration took office in October 2024 and has made several infrastructure announcements since then. The pool rehabilitation is part of a broader push to restore neglected municipal facilities across the city.
