Strong winds and dust storms swept through Tecate on Friday morning, with gusts reaching up to 63 kilometers per hour (39 mph). The conditions began around 10 a.m. and reduced visibility across the municipality, roughly 50 kilometers southeast of Tijuana near the U.S. border.

Tecate’s Municipal Coordination of Civil Protection and Firefighters had issued a meteorological alert the day before, warning residents of the incoming weather. The dust storms, known locally as tolvaneras, are common in the arid valleys around Tecate during spring but can still catch drivers and pedestrians off guard.

Driving Risks on Highway 3 and Local Roads

Wind gusts of 63 km/h are strong enough to push lightweight vehicles and reduce visibility to near zero during concentrated dust bursts. Highway 3, which connects Tecate to Ensenada through the wine country of the Valle de Guadalupe, is particularly exposed to crosswinds in open stretches between the mountains.

Drivers on Highway 2 between Tijuana and Tecate should also expect blowing dust, especially in the flat, open areas east of La Rumorosa pass. Civil protection authorities recommend pulling over safely if visibility drops suddenly rather than continuing at reduced speed.

What Residents Should Know

Loose outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash bins, and signage can become projectiles in sustained winds near 60 km/h. Residents with respiratory conditions should stay indoors and keep windows closed during active dust events. The fine particulate matter kicked up by tolvaneras can aggravate asthma and allergies.

Tecate sits in a valley at roughly 550 meters (1,800 feet) elevation, surrounded by dry hills that shed topsoil easily during spring wind events. The city typically sees its windiest conditions between March and May, when temperature differences between the coast and the desert interior create strong pressure gradients.

No injuries or major property damage had been reported as of Friday afternoon. The story was first reported by Zeta Tijuana.
