The Glorieta de las Mujeres Libres interchange project in San José del Cabo has reached 87 percent completion, according to Baja California Sur Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío, who toured the construction site alongside federal infrastructure secretary Jesús Antonio Esteva Medina and Los Cabos Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez. Officials expect the project to wrap up within weeks.
The interchange sits at the intersection commonly known as the Fonatur Roundabout, one of the most congested traffic points in all of Los Cabos. Located along Highway 1 (the Transpeninsular Highway), the junction connects the San José del Cabo hotel zone, the airport highway, and the tourist corridor leading to Cabo San Lucas. Before construction began in May 2025, the roundabout handled more than 60,000 vehicles per day. During peak hours, the bottleneck routinely added 20 to 30 minutes to airport transfers.
What the 700 Million Peso Project Includes
The 700 million peso project (roughly $35 million USD) includes a grade-separated overpass with four central lanes passing under the roundabout, a vehicular bridge, a signalized roundabout at street level, pedestrian crossings, a dedicated bike lane, and stormwater drainage. Street lighting, traffic signals, tactile paving for the visually impaired, and green space restoration are also part of the design. Signal synchronization across the corridor is planned to smooth traffic flow once the interchange opens.
The project is federally funded, part of the Sheinbaum administration’s broader infrastructure investment in Baja California Sur. As recently as early February, Mayor Agúndez Gómez had reported the project at 72 percent completion. The jump to 87 percent in a matter of weeks shows that work has accelerated as crews move from structural phases into finishing work like paving and surface-level installations.
Expect Continued Delays Until Opening
Drivers should still plan for lane shifts and detours near the site until the interchange fully opens. Travelers heading to or from Los Cabos International Airport are advised to add 30 extra minutes to their drive time during the remaining construction period. The disruption has affected local businesses in San José del Cabo for nearly a year.
The Fonatur Roundabout upgrade is not the only major road project in Los Cabos. Officials are also pursuing the proposed Interurban Corridor, a 6 billion peso highway that would create a new route between San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas to relieve congestion on the Transpeninsular Highway.
