A break in the main aqueduct serving San José del Cabo has left 14 neighborhoods without water, prompting the local water utility to deploy emergency tanker trucks while crews work to install a bypass line. OOMSAPAS Los Cabos (the municipal water and sewer agency) expects to begin restoring service gradually by Wednesday, June 3.

The rupture occurred on Aqueduct I, one of the primary water supply lines for the San José del Cabo area. Repair crews are working around the clock to complete a bypass that will reroute water around the damaged section of pipe.

Affected Neighborhoods

The 14 colonias currently without water include Centro (downtown San José del Cabo), Zona Hotelera, Campo de Golf, and Rosarito. The outage covers a wide swath of the town, from the tourist hotel zone along the coast to residential areas inland.

Water in the coastal desert of Los Cabos is a perennial concern. The region depends on aqueducts and, increasingly, desalination to supply a fast-growing population of roughly 350,000 residents plus millions of annual tourists. Breaks in the aging aqueduct infrastructure are not uncommon, though multi-day outages affecting this many neighborhoods are significant events.

Free Water Tanker Service

OOMSAPAS has activated a free emergency water delivery program for affected areas. Residents and visitors can request a tanker, known locally as a pipa, by sending a text message to 624-320-3670. The agency warned that all official pipas are clearly marked with OOMSAPAS logos and that the service is completely free of charge.

Anyone who encounters a person attempting to charge money for water deliveries should report the incident to the same phone number. Water scams during outages are a known problem in Los Cabos, and the utility is urging people to verify any delivery truck carries proper agency branding before accepting service.

What to Expect This Week

Once the bypass is operational, OOMSAPAS said water service will return gradually rather than all at once. Pressure may be low in some areas during the initial restoration phase. Hotels and rental properties in the Zona Hotelera and Campo de Golf areas may experience intermittent supply through Wednesday.

Visitors staying in the affected zones should confirm with their hotel or property manager that water service has been fully restored before relying on tap water. Stocking bottled water for drinking and basic needs is advisable through at least midweek.
