Rosarito’s Secretariat of Citizen Security and Mexico’s National Guard carried out a joint inspection of student belongings at Bicentenario de la Independencia Middle School on April 28. The operation used K9 units trained to detect illicit substances, with the stated goal of protecting students from drug-related risks on campus.

The inspection took place under the supervision of the city’s Preventive Programs Unit, which coordinated access with school administrators. Officials said they conducted the searches with attention to students’ rights, though no details were released about whether any prohibited items were found during the sweep.

Part of a Broader Municipal Security Strategy

The school operation is part of an ongoing Rosarito strategy that combines federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to address youth safety. Mayor Rocío Adame has made inter-agency coordination a centerpiece of her public security agenda, hosting regular “Construction of Peace Roundtable” sessions that bring together military, National Guard, and municipal police leaders.

Earlier this year, Rosarito security forces logged 769 school crossings and 704 patrols near educational institutions during a single reporting period. The city also launched the “No caigas en las redes” awareness campaign at COBACH Rosarito, reaching 800 adolescents with messaging about online safety.

Roving Inspections Planned for Other Schools

Authorities announced after the Bicentenario de la Independencia inspection that similar operations will continue on a rotating basis at other schools across the municipality. The program aims to deter drug use among teenagers and promote what officials described as “healthy lifestyles” through direct contact between students and preventive program officers.

Playas de Rosarito, located about 20 minutes south of the Tijuana border crossing along the Pacific coast, is home to a sizable community of American and Canadian residents. Many expat families enroll children in local public and private schools throughout the municipality.

The inspections add to a broader security picture in Rosarito that has included joint operations with the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and the Mexican Navy, as well as intensified patrols in neighborhoods such as Ampliación Plan Libertador, Real de Rosarito, and Benito Juárez. City data presented in late 2025 showed reductions in several key crime categories compared to the previous year.
