Puerto Paraíso mall in Cabo San Lucas has partially reopened after municipal authorities cleared the first section of the 27-year-old building following a preventive shutdown triggered by safety concerns. The ground floor’s first wing and the first level of the parking structure are now accessible to the public.

The XV Ayuntamiento de Los Cabos (municipal government) ordered the mall closed earlier this month after a hydrant system malfunction prompted a full structural inspection. Fire Chief Juan Antonio Carbajal Figueroa reported that the mall’s fire protection system was inoperative and that six safety incidents had been recorded at the property in a single month.

What Led to the Shutdown

Teams from Protección Civil (civil protection) and the Cabo San Lucas Fire Department conducted the initial technical inspection and found structural deficiencies along with problems in the property’s emergency protocols. Secretary General Alberto Rentería Santana said the municipality prioritized public safety given the heavy foot traffic the mall receives from both residents and visitors.

The marina-side complex on Lázaro Cárdenas in downtown Cabo San Lucas spans roughly 50,000 square meters across three levels. It houses retailers including Ruth’s Chris, Baja Brewing Company, and dozens of shops and services. The building’s age, nearly three decades, was cited as the reason authorities insisted on a thorough, section-by-section review rather than a blanket reopening.

What Comes Next

Inspections of the second level are ongoing this week. Authorities will reopen each additional section only after it passes structural and fire safety requirements. No timeline has been announced for a full reopening.

For now, visitors can access ground-floor shops and first-level parking. Upper floors and other sections remain closed. The mall’s normal operating hours are 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily, though individual stores in closed sections will not be available.
