A private jet experienced overheating in its landing gear after touching down at Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) on Saturday, triggering safety protocols and a temporary runway closure. The incident lasted roughly 30 minutes, and no injuries were reported.
Airport fire suppression crews responded immediately after the executive aircraft reported the landing gear problem. Staff activated the facility’s internal emergency plan, which included closing the main runway while crews assessed the situation and applied fire suppression measures.
Runway Cleared in 30 Minutes
Civil Protection official Francisco Cota Márquez confirmed the incident was handled entirely by airport personnel. No external emergency units from the municipality of Los Cabos were called to the scene. Cota Márquez said the airport’s own safety teams resolved the situation quickly.
The runway was inspected, declared safe, and reopened within approximately 30 minutes of the initial alert. Normal flight operations resumed without further delays, and the airport reported all arrivals and departures were running on schedule after the closure.
A Busy Gateway for Los Cabos Travelers
Los Cabos International Airport sits about 10 kilometers north of San José del Cabo and serves as the main gateway for travelers heading to both San José del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas. Operated by Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (GAP), the airport handled approximately 7.5 million passengers in its most recent annual reporting period. Major carriers including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, WestJet, and Aeromexico operate regular routes to and from the facility.
The airport is no stranger to aviation incidents. In April 2025, a Gulfstream V private jet flying from Teterboro, New Jersey, ran off the runway at the smaller Cabo San Lucas International Airport (CSL), located about 26 kilometers to the south. That airport primarily handles private and charter flights, while SJD serves as the commercial hub for the region.
Saturday’s incident was first reported by Colectivo Pericú.
